I’m typing this in bed in my hotel room. We got confirmation today that we will, indeed, be staying here on base for the rest of our trip, which works out well for access to work and the gym and everything else.
My friend and I headed out into Osan City this afternoon–crossing through that gate was a complete culture shock. We went from a semi-sleepy American community (albeit with a large Asian presence) to a bustling, crowded city with shops crammed together along every street and alley. For the first time since I arrived here in Korea I really felt like I was in a foreign country.
We had bulgogi, cooked at the low table where we sat cross-legged on the floor, and ate all the interesting side dishes. It was really good!
Tomorrow is a tour to the DMZ (that’s the demilitarized zone, the border between North and South Korea). This will be our only day off during this trip–we’re moving to 24/7 staffing soon. (12-hour shifts for each of us, though, so it won’t be too crazy.) So these couple days will be my only real taste of Korean culture before I descend into the rush-rush-rush of supporting an exercise.
So tired… I’m mostly adjusted to the time here, but I still find myself wanting to nod off to sleep starting from about 1 p.m. on. (That’s about 3 a.m. at home.)
