Today I was in the Green Bean (our centrally-located coffeeshop here at the Embassy), and I met a father-son duo who were deployed together to Iraq. Actually, one was stationed to the north of here, and one to the south, but they’d split the difference and met here at the Embassy.
They were both Army, but the father was National Guard. They were both enlisted, the dad with stripes and rockers and stars (I didn’t look closely enough to determine his rank; it takes me some serious staring and calculating to figure out the enlisted ranks for the other services—not maybe a good thing to admit when I’m deployed in a joint situation like this one!). The son was a one-striper.
Wow. What a good thing their family is doing for the country. It’s good to see that a father’s patriotism and service to his country would inspire his son to the same mission. I wish them both all the best, and will keep them in my thoughts and prayers as they keep on here in Iraq.
