There are big moves afoot in our office (We’re adding people into the office). I’m now starting to get worried about taking my days off; it sounds like one of the people who works in my corner wants to usurp my desk while I’m away, leaving me in a horrible desk with my back to the room and not even the illusion of privacy. I’ve threatened to throw big girly fits of tears and hysterics, I’ve tried to lobby to get people on my side, I’ve even stated (truthfully) that if they take away the last modicum of privacy that I have in this office (where I live for the bulk of each day), that I’m not going to be able to function.
(Did I mention that I am territorial?)
Oh, I guess if it happens I’ll deal. It will, without exception, count as the worst working situation that I’ve ever been in, but the way that they cram people into these offices really is not kosher. And we definitely don’t have it the worst of anybody here; there’s an office a third the size of ours across the hall that has 8 people crammed into it. And heck, I’ve worked with my back to a hallway before; I actually know the appropriate defense mechanisms to deal with it. But I don’t even like having my back to a room full of people when I’m in a restaurant, let alone when I’m working on a computer all the time.
It’s left over from a book about assassins that I read at an impressionable time in my life. One of the biggest rules for them was never to sit with their back to a doorway, or so that you couldn’t see who was coming and going behind you. And having spent some time around Marines, police, and so on, they’ve all confirmed that notion. In fact, one guy I knew wouldn’t sit on the inside of a booth because he always wanted to be able and ready to deal with anything that might come up. I, on the other hand, prefer to see everything that’s going on, but if you want to tuck me back in a corner away from everything, that’s what I prefer!
Oh well; I guess it’s all a ploy to get me to adore my cubicle in the office back at home. If so, it’s working!
