Or so it feels . . . It was kind of embarrassing, these last two days, to be wandering around here in my blue tennis shoes, so tonight when a lovely lieutenant colonel that I’d ran into at the PX yesterday caught me in the hall and insisted I come back to pick up her extra pair of boots with her, it was a wonderful thing. She had an extra pair that were big enough for me (even a little too big, but given the tender state of my heels, this is a good thing), and she was nice enough to bring me back with her right when she saw me so that she was sure I got them. The kindness of strangers . . . or new acquaintances.
And since I just got a new holster that slings over my shoulder and is light-colored suede instead of the forest-green web belt holster, I don’t feel like a just-got-over-here geek anymore. Tomorrow I won’t even stand out from everyone else when I go into the early morning “this is the state of things around here” briefing. (And in the military, you don’t want to stand out, especially in terms of uniform breaches!)
I’ll have to get a picture of myself all together and looking official. And I need to show pictures of my finished side of the trailer, too. Oddly, my roommate hasn’t shown up yet. There are signs of her residence here, but she wasn’t here all last night and she doesn’t seem to be showing up tonight. I think she may be Army and on R&R somewhere else, perhaps. “Welcome back–now you’ve got a roommate . . .” Hmmm. Not sure that would be a welcome I’d want . . .
It’ll be weird to have a roommate again–you know, a flesh and blood one who actually comes in and out. I haven’t had a roommate since . . . well, I shared a two-bedroom apartment back in 2001, but I haven’t had someone actually in a room with me except for when I was in OTS in 2002. Before that it would have had to have been my junior year of college . . .
However, we work such long hours around here that it’s unlikely having a roommate would make much of a difference to you one way or another. After all, in the maybe 1 or 2 non-sleeping hours you have each day to yourself, there are lots of other things to do than hang out in your trailer. Of course that’s what I’m doing so far because it’s nice to catch up on things here, but I’m sure I’ll be a little less frequent with it once I get into a groove at work. Then again, I’m not sure what else I’d do with my time . . .
All right, that’s it for now. I need to get up earlier tomorrow because I’m going to that meeting in the morning.
